Why do I use PHP?
What is the problem with Laravel?
Well, I decided to let that one pass and we moved ahead with the installation… We were told to install composer from the command prompt. It kinds of reminds me of doing npm stuff. Then we had to install laravel by typing more commands, this was really a pain in the ass because you can’t even see most of your installation progress. It downloads a whole bunch of stuff and dumps it on a certain directory on your computer, it decides where to put it and it doesn’t even asks for your permission on where to put it.
Okay, when we finished the installation we moved on to the tutorial and we saw the horror of the whole laravel system of doing things. You have to type more commands on the command prompt to get more stuff done! We were told that laravel can create a login page for you automatically, handle the authentication automatically, handle the registration automatically and even handle the forget password process automatically for you. This seemed like a very cool idea, the problem is that it isn’t.
Laravel seems to assume almost everything for you, it seems to be doing black magic behind the scenes. How does laravel know that my web page is supposed to look like that? Why do they predetermine what my sidebar should be. They even predetermined the design of almost all your UI components of your web page, not every developer wants this. I discovered some strange code syntax that must be embedded onto your HTML to render some certain view components. You will ultimately loose the ability to customize or control most of the stuff laravel generates for you and the more you go into it, it becomes obvious that anything you’re supposed to do must be done on the laravel way.
Finally Laravel seemes to abandon the default Apache server and it installed and ran on a separate server on another port number. This one alone really turned me off. I think Laravel is for lazy developers who don’t intend to learn and understand all aspects of web development and want to be spoon fed with ready made solutions irrespective of how the solutions are made and structured. Maybe I am missing something or maybe I didn’t have enough patience to understand and see the benefits, if you think I am seriously missing something, then feel free to let me know in the comments. Whatever the case may be, I don’t think I will enjoy typing commands on the command prompt to get stuff done, it just puts me off!
Thanks for Reading.
